Of the two major national day celebrations that India observes, Republic Day is certainly more colourful because of the pomp and power government displays on New Delhi’s imposing Central Vista avenue. Amidst the glitter and glory, we tend to forget why we celebrate this day. On this 26th day of January in 1950, India gave effect to the Constitution of a free nation and replaced the Imperial-era Government of India Act of 1935.

সব সৃজনশীল ব্যক্তিদের মতো রাধাপ্রসাদ গুপ্ত — যাঁকে সকলে RP বা শাঁটুলবাবু বা 'দা' সম্বোধন করত । তিনি নিজের সৃষ্টি বা রচনা নিয়েই ব্যস্ত থাকতেন, তাঁর লেখা গুছিয়ে রাখার কাজে সময় নষ্ট করতেন না ৷ আমরা কেউ জিজ্ঞেস করলে তিনি হঠাৎ কিছুক্ষণ চুপ করে থাকতেন, এবং তাঁর আরাম কেদারায় বসে চিন্তা করতেন। তারপর লাফিয়ে উঠতেন আর একগাদা কাগজ ফাইল ঘেঁটে অনেকক্ষণ পরে একটি হাতে লেখা বা টাইপ করা কাগজ বের করে বলতেন “এই দেখ। হতভাগাটাকে পেলুম। কোথায় কোথায় যে লুকিয়ে থাকে! আমার স্পষ্ট মনে আছে আমি এটি অমুকের জন্যে লিখেছিলেন লিখেছিলাম।” আমরা ওই লেখা পড়তাম আর প্রয়োজন হলে তাঁর খাওয়ার টেবিলে বসে নিজের হাতে কপি করতাম। জেরক্স টেরক্স ছিল না।

“Forgive them, for they knew not what they were doing; But some did, and did not care!” These impassioned words were inscribed on a poster that was mounted and was fixed on the wall over my desk. It inspired me for several years until the compulsions of my job took me away from that house. The poster was printed by the Ananda Bazar group and it depicted an old sepia tint photograph of demolition labourers tearing down the Senate Hall of Calcutta University, in 1960.
