No, I am neither going to attack nor defend Rhea Chakraborty or Kangana Ranaut. The very fact that they are hogging prime time is repugnant to those who look forward to news for information. For entertainment, there are endless frothy soap operas and many love to see merciless boxing and wrestling matches as proxies for their suppressed rage. But when news television subsumes these genres, it cheats and misleads a nation.
There is nothing really amiss if a singer insists on bringing his own musicians, as they understand him rather well. But then, when he has pole-vaulted himself to the most critical position of deciding the fate of 130 crore souls, there is cause for alarm at such an infantile insistence. The administration of this vast, complex country requires real professional skills and not just agreeability or the carrying out of commands.

এই স্বাধীনতা দিবসেও আমরা নিশ্চয় দিল্লির লালকেল্লা থেকে প্রচুর ছাতি ফোলানো গর্বের কথা শুনব আর জাতিপ্রেমের ফোয়ারার আবেগে নিজেদের ভাসিয়ে দেওয়ার বাণীও পাব। কিন্তু যখন ভারতের বর্তমান প্রধানমন্ত্রী স্বাধীনতা সংগ্রামের অমর শহিদদের স্মরণ করবেন, তিনি কি এই ইতিহাসের সম্পূর্ণ সত্য ঘটনাগুলি বলবেন? তিনি ভুলেও আমাদের বলবেন না যে, তাঁর দলের নিয়ন্ত্রণকারী ও প্রেরণাদায়ক সংগঠন ওই সংগ্রামে অংশগ্রহণ তো করেনি বটেই, উপরন্তু কয়েক স্থানে বাধাও দিয়েছে? রাষ্ট্রীয় স্বয়ংসেবক সঙ্ঘ বা আরএসএস-এর ভূমিকা বুঝতে গেলে তার দ্বিতীয় সরসঙ্ঘ-চালক এম এস গোলওয়ালকরের প্রবন্ধ ‘এক বীর্যবান জাতীয়তার দিকে’ পড়তে হবে। সেখানে তিনি স্পষ্ট ভাষায় বলেছেন, ইংরেজ রাজশক্তির বিরুদ্ধে সরাসরি আন্দোলন করাকে তাঁরা জাতীয়তাবাদ বলে মনে করেন না।

We know that this is one of the three unique traits that distinguish the state from all other organisations, including those more prosperous or powerful. These are the legitimate right to impose taxes (everyone else ‘charges’ people); the inherent right to requisition men, materials, places and buildings (as during elections or wars); and the third is its basic right to kill. It thus declares all other killings are homicides and prosecutes the perpetrators, leading occasionally to capital punishment, after due trial and the process of law.
In these troubled times, when the soldiers of the two largest nations of the world fight and kill each other so viciously, let us try to trace the historical roots of such antagonism. If both nations hark back to a common narrative about Buddhism being a gift from India and both respect the pious Chinese monks who came here on pilgrimage, where does such pent up anger come from? We need to understand first that India and China are not just two nation states and that they are really two of the world’s oldest and largest civilisations.

একটাই বিপর্যয়ে সমস্ত অঞ্চলের সমস্ত বর্গের ভারতবাসী বিপন্ন— এমন ঘটনা আমাদের গোটা ইতিহাসে এই প্রথম ঘটল। কোনও যুদ্ধেরই এমন প্রভাব পড়েনি। এমনকি দ্বিতীয় মহাযুদ্ধেরও নয়। চিনের সঙ্গে এক বার, পাকিস্তানের বিরুদ্ধে তিন তিন বার, তাতেও নয়। সব যুদ্ধই লড়েছেন সৈনিকরা, রণাঙ্গনে দাঁড়িয়ে। দেশের সর্বত্র সবাইকে যুদ্ধে জড়িয়ে পড়তে হয়েছে, এমনটা এই প্রথম। করোনা মৃত্যুতে গণতন্ত্র এনেছে, মর্যাদা কিংবা ক্ষমতা, কাউকেই সে পাত্তা দেয়নি। শুধু এ দেশে নয়, দুনিয়া জুড়ে। ফলে আমাদের আতঙ্ক একেবারে সর্বগ্রাসী। এই বিপদের মোকাবিলায় আমাদের তাই ঐক্য চাই, চাই দৃঢ় প্রত্যয়। কিন্তু আন্তর্জাতিক পরিসরে এখনও তার দেখা মিলছে না। এই বিষয়ে একসঙ্গে কথা বলতেই জি-২০ গোষ্ঠীর দেশগুলি অনেক সময় নিয়েছিল।
It would not be correct to view the recent communal riots in Delhi that claimed 50 lives as a failure of the government of Narendra Modi and Amit Shah. It is actually a major victory of this regime and the whole idea was to demonstrate what this government is capable of inflicting on minorities and its other opponents. Let us see if we can pick up the many messages that Modi and Shah have given us through this riot.
অনেকেই মনে করেন দিল্লীর সদ্য সমাপ্ত সাম্প্রদায়িক দাঙ্গা যাতে পঞ্চাশ জনের মৃত্যু হয়েছে এই সরকারের চরম অকৃতকার্যতার এক নিদর্শন। কিন্তু এই ধারণা বোধহয় ঠিক নয়। এটা আসলে তাদের সুচিন্তিত পরিকল্পনার জয় এবং বিশেষজ্ঞরা চেষ্টা করছে বুঝতে শাসক দল আমাদের কি বার্তা পৌঁছতে চেয়েছে এই দুর্ভাগ্যজনক ঘটনার মাধ্যম। নরেন্দ্র মোদী এবং অমিত শাহ সর্বপ্রথম আমাদের স্পষ্ট করে দেখিয়েছেন যে তাঁরা ভারতের মুসলমানদের কি ভাবে নির্বিকারে পুলিশের সামনেই সাফ করে দিতে পারেন। কেউ তাদের রুখতে পারবে না।
Last year in December, when agitations against the discriminatory Citizenship Amendment Act had just begun, in an article published in The Wire, I had stated:
“No one can predict how long the public anger will be sustained and how the Modi-Shah duo will retort, and with what ferocity and vindictiveness. One prays that communal conflicts do not break out in this charged atmosphere or are even manufactured to split the movement.”
গত ডিসেম্বরে যখন বৈষম্যমূলক নাগরিকত্ব সংশোধনী আইন (সিএএ) নিয়ে বিক্ষোভ শুরু হয়েছে, সে-সময় এই পত্রিকায় প্রকাশিত আমার এক নিবন্ধে লিখেছিলাম, “মোদী-শাহ যুগল কী ভাবে প্রত্যাঘাত করবেন সেটাও আমাদের অজানা। একটা আশঙ্কা অনেকের মনেই আছে, সাম্প্রদায়িক দাঙ্গার আশঙ্কা।” (‘বহুত্ব, শেষ পর্যন্ত’, ২৭-১২)। আজ যখন সেই ‘দাঙ্গা’ সফল ভাবে কার্যকর করা হচ্ছে, প্রাণহানিও হচ্ছে, তখন খুব গভীর ভাবে বোঝা প্রয়োজন যে, আমাদের লড়াইটা আসলে কার বিরুদ্ধে।
