We are all aware of the large-scale protests, some violent, that shook the United States soon after videos showing how white police officers mercilessly caused the death of a black man, George Floyd, in Minneapolis went viral. As ‘coloured’ people, our natural sympathies go to those oppressed by the white man, but we also realise that as long as the malaise of racial discrimination is not eradicated, its external manifestations are bound to recur. Colourism—which propagates an aversion towards those who do not look like us and are therefore ugly—is our enemy, not the police.
Despite considerable material progress, the world still views India as an ancient land steeped in spirituality, with a culture that stretches back to a hoary, unfathomable past. Indians, too, subscribe to this glorification of its timelessness and have been encouraged, especially in the last few years, to take an obsessive pride in this tryst with eternity. Thus, we can hardly be faulted in subscribing to very marketable propositions, like the one that claims our classical dance forms represent an unbroken tradition for several millennia and all of them go back to the venerable sage, Bharata Muni, who composed Natyashastra.

If John Kenneth Galbraith’s description of India as a “functioning anarchy” held, we should have collapsed before the coronavirus by now. This will also help those who are still struggling to understand how the Modi comet appeared in 2014 and completely blazed out all traces of 67 long years of secularism practised by the Indian republic, sometimes quite sincerely and rather patchily in others.
একটাই বিপর্যয়ে সমস্ত অঞ্চলের সমস্ত বর্গের ভারতবাসী বিপন্ন— এমন ঘটনা আমাদের গোটা ইতিহাসে এই প্রথম ঘটল। কোনও যুদ্ধেরই এমন প্রভাব পড়েনি। এমনকি দ্বিতীয় মহাযুদ্ধেরও নয়। চিনের সঙ্গে এক বার, পাকিস্তানের বিরুদ্ধে তিন তিন বার, তাতেও নয়। সব যুদ্ধই লড়েছেন সৈনিকরা, রণাঙ্গনে দাঁড়িয়ে। দেশের সর্বত্র সবাইকে যুদ্ধে জড়িয়ে পড়তে হয়েছে, এমনটা এই প্রথম। করোনা মৃত্যুতে গণতন্ত্র এনেছে, মর্যাদা কিংবা ক্ষমতা, কাউকেই সে পাত্তা দেয়নি। শুধু এ দেশে নয়, দুনিয়া জুড়ে। ফলে আমাদের আতঙ্ক একেবারে সর্বগ্রাসী। এই বিপদের মোকাবিলায় আমাদের তাই ঐক্য চাই, চাই দৃঢ় প্রত্যয়। কিন্তু আন্তর্জাতিক পরিসরে এখনও তার দেখা মিলছে না। এই বিষয়ে একসঙ্গে কথা বলতেই জি-২০ গোষ্ঠীর দেশগুলি অনেক সময় নিয়েছিল।
It would not be correct to view the recent communal riots in Delhi that claimed 50 lives as a failure of the government of Narendra Modi and Amit Shah. It is actually a major victory of this regime and the whole idea was to demonstrate what this government is capable of inflicting on minorities and its other opponents. Let us see if we can pick up the many messages that Modi and Shah have given us through this riot.
অনেকেই মনে করেন দিল্লীর সদ্য সমাপ্ত সাম্প্রদায়িক দাঙ্গা যাতে পঞ্চাশ জনের মৃত্যু হয়েছে এই সরকারের চরম অকৃতকার্যতার এক নিদর্শন। কিন্তু এই ধারণা বোধহয় ঠিক নয়। এটা আসলে তাদের সুচিন্তিত পরিকল্পনার জয় এবং বিশেষজ্ঞরা চেষ্টা করছে বুঝতে শাসক দল আমাদের কি বার্তা পৌঁছতে চেয়েছে এই দুর্ভাগ্যজনক ঘটনার মাধ্যম। নরেন্দ্র মোদী এবং অমিত শাহ সর্বপ্রথম আমাদের স্পষ্ট করে দেখিয়েছেন যে তাঁরা ভারতের মুসলমানদের কি ভাবে নির্বিকারে পুলিশের সামনেই সাফ করে দিতে পারেন। কেউ তাদের রুখতে পারবে না।
সম্প্রতি প্রধানমন্ত্রী নরেন্দ্র মোদী যখন শ্যামাপ্রসাদ মুখোপাধ্যায়ের নামে কলকাতা বন্দরের নাম বদলানোর প্রস্তাব দেন, নিঃসন্দেহে সেই বিতর্কিত আইকনকে বাজি ধরতে চেয়েছিলেন তিনি। নাম বদলের ক্ষেত্রে এত মহান দেশনায়কদের ছেড়ে শ্যামাপ্রসাদের মতো সাম্প্রদায়িক নেতার নির্বাচন নিয়ে বাংলার দিকে দিকে জোরালো প্রতিবাদও হয়েছে।
Last year in December, when agitations against the discriminatory Citizenship Amendment Act had just begun, in an article published in The Wire, I had stated:
“No one can predict how long the public anger will be sustained and how the Modi-Shah duo will retort, and with what ferocity and vindictiveness. One prays that communal conflicts do not break out in this charged atmosphere or are even manufactured to split the movement.”
গত ডিসেম্বরে যখন বৈষম্যমূলক নাগরিকত্ব সংশোধনী আইন (সিএএ) নিয়ে বিক্ষোভ শুরু হয়েছে, সে-সময় এই পত্রিকায় প্রকাশিত আমার এক নিবন্ধে লিখেছিলাম, “মোদী-শাহ যুগল কী ভাবে প্রত্যাঘাত করবেন সেটাও আমাদের অজানা। একটা আশঙ্কা অনেকের মনেই আছে, সাম্প্রদায়িক দাঙ্গার আশঙ্কা।” (‘বহুত্ব, শেষ পর্যন্ত’, ২৭-১২)। আজ যখন সেই ‘দাঙ্গা’ সফল ভাবে কার্যকর করা হচ্ছে, প্রাণহানিও হচ্ছে, তখন খুব গভীর ভাবে বোঝা প্রয়োজন যে, আমাদের লড়াইটা আসলে কার বিরুদ্ধে।

I congratulate the Iran Society of Kolkata for stepping into its 75th year — which is no mean achievement. I also compliment the Iran Society for conducting a 3-day International Seminar on the subject: ‘Persian Heritage of Bengal’. It is, indeed, the most appropriate occasion for deliberating on this topic, as Bengal is certainly a major beneficiary from its six centuries of association with Persian language and culture.
The sudden, unplanned outburst in many parts of India on the issue of citizenship is, no doubt, the first major agitation against Narendra Modi. For 5.5 years, the world’s largest democracy silently watched authoritarianism and communalism tighten their stranglehold, but now it appears to have found its voice back.

It is quite surprising that the claimed cultural capital of India does not have one worthwhile art museum or an international-standard exhibition space for painting, photography and other forms of visual arts. While the Biswa Bangla complex does the city proud, it is not meant for art like, say, the National Gallery of Modern Art is. This art museum is at its grandest in Delhi, but Mumbai and Bengaluru also have scaled-down NGMAs. Calcutta was obviously bypassed for the fourth NGMA, surprisingly without protest.
It is only natural for Kolkata to have some of the finest specimens of colonial architecture. After all, it enjoyed the status of being, for one and half centuries, the capital of the British Empire in India and of the East India Company’s Dominions, prior to that. We may marvel at the Gothic architecture of the High Court and St Paul’s Cathedral as great examples of this class.
