একশো বছরেরও বেশি আগে ব্রিটিশ পর্যবেক্ষকরা লক্ষ করেছিলেন, ‘ভারত জুড়ে বৈশাখের শুক্লপক্ষের তৃতীয় দিনে অক্ষয় তৃতীয়া পালন করা হয়। মানুষের বিশ্বাস, এই দিন স্নান করে ব্রাহ্মণকে পাখা, ছাতা এবং অর্থ দান করলে অক্ষয় পুণ্য অর্জিত হয়। ফলে এই তিথি উদ্যাপন অত্যন্ত জনপ্রিয়।’
ভারতের অসামান্য বৈচিত্রের উৎকৃষ্টতম প্রমাণ হল এত রকমের ক্যালেন্ডার এবং ‘নববর্ষ’। বহু ভাষা এবং সংস্কৃতি শতাব্দীর পর শতাব্দী ধরে ধীরে ধীরে একে অন্যের সঙ্গে মিলেছে, তাদের উপর কোনও একমাত্রিক তকমা চাপিয়ে দেওয়া যায়নি। কিন্তু আমরা দেখব, এই বহু ‘নববর্ষ’-এর বৈচিত্রের মধ্যে ক্রমশ একটা ঐক্যের ধারণা তৈরি হয়েছে।
একটা প্রশ্ন প্রায়ই ওঠে: খ্রিস্টের ক্রুশবিদ্ধ হওয়ার দিনকে ‘গুড ফ্রাইডে’ কেন বলা হয়? এমন যন্ত্রণাদায়ক অবসানের মধ্যে ‘শুভ’টা কী? বস্তুত, জার্মানিতে এবং অন্য কোথাও কোথাও খ্রিস্টধর্মের কিছু ধারায় এই দিনটির নাম ‘বেদনাময় শুক্রবার’। ইংরেজি নামটির একটি ব্যাখ্যা হল, এটি ‘গড’স ফ্রাইডে’র পরিবর্তিত রূপ। আবার, পবিত্র (‘হোলি’ বা ‘পায়াস’) অর্থে প্রাচীন ইংরেজিতে ‘গুড’ শব্দটি ব্যবহৃত হত, নামটা সেখান থেকেও এসে থাকতে পারে। এটিই ইস্টার পরবের প্রধান দিন।
ভারতবাসী সারা বছর ধরে যত উত্সব করে, তার মধ্যে হোলির সঙ্গে শাস্ত্রের সম্পর্ক সবচেয়ে কম আর বেলাগাম হুল্লোড় সবচেয়ে বেশি। ফাল্গুনের পূর্ণিমা তিথিতে এই উত্স, সাধারণত আগের রাত্রে হোলিকা দহন দিয়ে এর সূচনা হয়, তার পর সারা দিন অসহায় মানুষজনের উপর আবির এবং রঙের বর্ষণ চলে, শেষ হয় মিষ্টি এবং অন্য নানা খাদ্য ও পানীয়ের উল্লাসে। পণ্ডিত এস এম নটেশ শাস্ত্রীর বক্তব্য: ‘এর সঙ্গে কোনও ধর্মীয় অনুষ্ঠানের কিছুমাত্র যোগ নেই, তবে নির্বোধ আচরণ আছে প্রভূত পরিমাণে।’
কূটনীতিতে ‘সফ্ট পাওয়ার’ কথাটা খুব প্রচলিত। একটি দেশ অন্যান্য দেশের উপর নিজের সাংস্কৃতিক প্রভাব বিস্তার করতে পারলে যে কূটনৈতিক শক্তি অর্জন করে, সেটাই সফ্ট পাওয়ার। অনেকের মতেই, ভারতের এই ক্ষমতা অর্জনের চেষ্টা করা উচিত। কী ভাবে? মনে রাখা দরকার, সভ্যতার ইতিহাসে ভারতের সবচেয়ে শক্তিমান সাংস্কৃতিক রফতানিটি হল বৌদ্ধ দর্শন, যে দর্শন শান্তি ও অহিংসার আদর্শকে তুলে ধরে।
পুরাণের শিব প্রধানত পুরুষের আরাধ্য। উপোস করে শিবের মাথায় জল ঢেলে শিবরাত্রি পালনের যে ব্রত মেয়েদের শেখানো হয়েছে, সেটি পিতৃতন্ত্রের ঐতিহাসিক কারসাজি।
ভারতে ‘বৈচিত্রের মাঝে ঐক্য’ নিয়ে আমরা অনেক কথা বলে থাকি, কিন্তু কথাটার সত্য অর্থ উপলব্ধি করতে চাইলে আমাদের কিছু নির্দিষ্ট সাংস্কৃতিক ঐতিহ্যের দিকে দৃষ্টিপাত করতে হবে। যেমন, এমন নানা উত্সব আছে, যেগুলির ঐতিহাসিক উত্স বিভিন্ন অঞ্চলে বিভিন্ন রকম, অথচ অনেক জায়গাতেই যেগুলি বছরের কোনও একটি সময়েই উদ্যাপিত হয়ে আসছে।
বছর কয়েক আগে আমি যখন ভারত সরকারের সংস্কৃতি সচিব ছিলাম, তখন পশ্চিমবঙ্গ ক্যাডারের তিন জন অফিসার কেন্দ্রীয় সার্কেলের বিভিন্ন মন্ত্রকে সচিব পদে ছিলেন। বাঙালি, কিন্তু অন্য রাজ্যের ক্যাডারের অফিসার, এমন কয়েকজন ছিলেন অর্থ মন্ত্রকে, যোজনা কমিশনে। উত্তরপ্রদেশ ক্যাডারের পুলক চট্টোপাধ্যায় প্রধানমন্ত্রীর সচিব হয়েছিলেন। ফিকিতে ছিলেন পশ্চিমবঙ্গের বর্তমান অর্থমন্ত্রী অমিত মিত্র। সি. আই. আই.-এর প্রধান সচিব ছিলেন তরুণ দাস। দুজন নন- আই.এ.এস. সচিব ছিলেন বিজ্ঞানবিষয়ক মন্ত্রকে — একজন পারমানবিক শক্তি দফতরের খুবই গুরুত্বপূর্ণ দায়িত্বে, আর অন্য জন সি.এস.আই.আর-এ।
The first mention that one gets is about the celebration of shining lights is when Ramachandra returned victorious to Ayodhya, though Lakshmi does not feature here. The Kamasutra of Vatsyana, whose final product also appears like the Ramayana in the 3rd or 4th century AD mentions Yaksha's night, when houses should be illuminated with numerous tiny earthen lamps. ‘Yaksha’ were usually short pot-bellied indigenous creatures who stood outside temples as dwaar-paals. The Jain acharyas, Hemchandra and Yashodhara, describe this ‘Yaksha night of lights’ and this point to the Brahmanic adoption of a popular local observance.
এই উৎসবের প্রথম উল্লেখ পাই রামায়ণে, রামচন্দ্র যখন যুদ্ধজয় করে সীতাকে নিয়ে ফিরলেন, তখন অযোধ্যার ঘরে ঘরে দীপালিকায় আলো জ্বলেছিল। সেখানে অবশ্য লক্ষ্মীর কোনও নামগন্ধ নেই। তৃতীয় বা চতুর্থ শতাব্দীতে রামায়ণের মোটামুটি সমসাময়িক বাত্স্যায়নের কামসূত্রে যক্ষের রাত্রির কথা আছে, যে রাতে ছোট ছোট প্রদীপ জ্বালিয়ে জনপদ সাজাতে হয়। এটি এক লোকাচার, যা ব্রাহ্মণ্যতন্ত্র ক্রমশ গ্রহণ করে নিয়েছিল। কিন্তু এখানেও লক্ষ্মীর কোনও প্রত্যক্ষ উল্লেখ নেই। অবশ্য যক্ষ থেকে যেমন ঐশ্বর্যের দেবতা কুবের এলেন, লক্ষ্মী যদি তেমনই এসে থাকেন, তা হলে আলাদা কথা। তবে এটা ঠিকই যে, পুরাণের দেবী লক্ষ্মী এক সময় যক্ষদের দীপালোকিত রাত্রির উৎসবটি নিজের করে নেন।
B V Keskar was Pandit Nehru’s Information Minister for a decade, from 1952 to 1962. For him, Hindi film songs were a strict ‘no-no’ where Akashvani was concerned, as in his opinion, it should be the mission of the public broadcaster, to encourage only classical music. He had to face a lot of pressure and ridicule for this rather obdurate stand, but there is no doubt that had it not been for him, Indian classical music may have never reached and enthralled the common man,because classical music by its very nature was meant primarily for the elite.
The year was 1967. I had joined Class X, in the Humanities Section, with an enviable track record of standing last or second last in every class from VI onward. The crowning glory was my failure to pass Class VIII, followed by my close shaves in my second year in the same class as well as in the next class, when I studied Science in the ‘Higher Secondary’ stream, where one had to fight all the time. The other ‘feathers’ in my cap were the several warnings received for ‘poor conduct’, mischief and misbehavior. In other words, I was declared an ideal bad student when I joined, not without trepidation, the first day in my new class.
Every major nation in the world has a public broadcaster and there must be some reason why they do. Before we can discuss the shortcomings of Prasar Bharati, the autonomous body that supervises Doordarshan (DD) and All India Radio (AIR), we may recall that even as its Act was passed by Parliament in 1990, its spirit of autonomy was vitiated by two sections, 32 and 33, which took away with the left hand what the right gave. They ensured that all its major decisions like manpower, recruitment, service conditions, salaries and critical issues would be decided only by the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (I&B).

আজ দূরদর্শনে রাত সাড়ে দশটায় ‘জীবনস্মৃতি: সিলেক্টেড মেমরিজ্’ দেখানো হবে। রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুর বিষয়ে ঋতুপর্ণ ঘোষের তথ্যচিত্র। সর্বভারতীয় দর্শকদের জন্য তৈরি ছবি, তাই ইংরাজিতে — সত্যজিৎ রায়ের তথ্যচিত্রটির মতোই। ছবিটা যে অবশেষে দেখানো হবে, এটা প্রবল স্বস্তির খবর — কী অসম্ভব দেরি হল যদিও। ঋতুর সঙ্গে যত বারই কথা হয়েছে, মনে হত এই সরকারি দীর্ঘসূত্রতায় বড্ড হতাশ হয়ে পড়েছে। সরকারি কাজে এতটা দেরি কেন হয়, ও সেটা বুঝতেই পারত না। আজ ঋতু থাকলে খুশি হত। ওর জন্য অন্তত এইটুকু করা আমাদের কর্তব্যই ছিল।
Prasar Bharati came into being on 28 th November 1997 after Prasar Bharati Act of 1990 was finally implemented by the Government and the Directorates of All India Radio (Akashvani) and Doordarshan were separated from Ministry of Information & Broadcasting and placed under an ‘autonomous body’. It was a momentous decision that came some seven years after Parliament had taken pains to conceive of a Public Service Broadcaster, whose character was eloquently worded in the Statement of Objects and Reasons.
কলকাতার ট্রাম, বিশেষ করে ময়দান ও সংলগ্ন এলাকায়, একটা বিশেষ আকর্ষণ হয়ে উঠতে পারে। সহজেই আমরা কয়েকটি রংচঙে ট্রাম শুধুমাত্র স্থানীয় এবং বিদেশী পর্যটকদের জন্য রেখে দিতে পারি। চিৎপুর রোডের কথাই ধরা যাক। রাস্তাটার আনাচে - কানাচে ইতিহাসের গন্ধ। কিন্তু গাড়িঘোড়ার ভিড় ঠেলে যাওয়াটা বিরাট সমস্যা। ধীরগতির ট্রামে বসে চিৎপুর রোড ধরে যাওয়াটা নিঃসন্দেহে একটা দারুণ অভিজ্ঞতা হতে পারে।
সুনীল গঙ্গোপাধ্যায়কে কবে প্রথম দেখেছি ঠিক মনে পড়ে না। মনে আছে, তারাপদ রায়ের ওখানে এক আড্ডায় একদিন তাঁকে দেখলাম, বয়সে তরুণ, কালো মোটা ফ্রেমের চশমার নীচে এক জোড়া সন্ধানী চোখ। তারাপদবাবু যেখানে খুব প্রাণবন্ত, সরস আর তাঁর পাঞ্চলাইনগুলো দিয়ে ঘণ্টার পর ঘণ্টা মাতিয়ে রাখতেন, সুনীলদা সেখানে অনুচ্চ, কাউকে ইমপ্রেস করার কোনও দায় নেই তাঁর। হয়তো গ্লাস হাতে আরামে বসে আছেন এক কোণে, কোনও গুণমুগ্ধ তরুণীকে মিষ্টি করে বলছেন, তার চোখ দুটো ভারী সুন্দর। তাঁর এই স্বচ্ছ¨, স্বতঃস্ফূর্ত কথোপকথনের ঢঙই তাঁর লেখায় এনেছিল এক অনায়াস, বিরল গতিময়তা।
Swami Vivekananda was one of the greatest patriots, thinkers, philosophers and spiritual leaders, India has ever produced. He lived only for thirty nine and a half years, of which he devoted the last nine and half years totally to the service of humanity. Though he left the world well over a century ago, Swamiji’s teachings remains very relevant to us in the twenty-first 21st Century. This is more so because mankind is struggling more now to adjust to more frequent socioeconomic changes. The very rapid pace at which developments are overtaking us is surely leading to a transitory segment of social confusion, unrest, and apprehension. This produces a very demanding and stressful life style.
“Life was solitary, poor, nasty,” droned the professor on a hot, lazy afternoon when the body clocks of most students signalled that it was time for a lovely surreptitious siesta, without actually dozing off on to the next guy’s shoulder. This was sometime in my first year at Presidency, when I was being introduced to the wondrous possibilities of how the State had emerged in history.
